How to deal with stalled lift belts & inclined belts? Self- unloading bulk carriers procedure

In the event of a stalled lift belt, the hydraulic control system is equipped with a high pressure setting for the lift belts. To engage this setting the system must be completely shut down, and changed over to manual mode. The inner and outer Boom Belts are to be started from the local manual control stations

The key switch on the cargo control room control stand must be turned to the highest pressure mode. The stalled belt must then be started from the local control station, which is located in the lift belt casing. If the belt starts it is to be run in this mode until it is clear of cargo. The system must then be shut down and re-started in the automatic mode. Unloading can then be resumed as normal. If the stalled belt does not start in the high pressure setting mode this constitutes a hazardous situation, and rectification of this situation must be clearly and logically planned.


A lift belt which has stopped while full of cargo, especially iron ore, is in an out-of-balance condition. The cargo contained in the vertical lift section of the belt by virtue of its mass, is exerting a very large force to move the belt in the reverse direction, and this force is resisted by the backstops only. To rectify this imbalance it is imperative that cargo is removed initially from the top part of the system, working gradually towards the lower part of the system.

Dealing with inclined belts

This type of elevating system uses the ‘gradual incline’ of an upward sloping belt and undercarriage system, to raise the cargo to the boom. The gradual incline is fixed between 10 and 18 degrees from the horizontal plane of the tank-top, depending on the type, size and weight of the cargo material.

The inclined belt can be separate, and supplied with cargo material by the athwartship transfer belts, or the hold conveyor belts which are designed to incline upwards gradually, and feed a shuttle conveyor boom at the stern. The inclines are limited to an angle, after which the cargo material it carries, will start to slide back. The limit of the inclined belt thus depends on the coefficient of friction of the material and the carrying belt. Other properties of the inclined belt system are:

  1. Simple design and standard components are used.
  2. Lower level of maintenance, compared to other lifting systems.
  3. Occupies more space.
  4. Slower rates of discharge.
  5. Limited kinds of cargo can be delivered.
